Polyacrylamide and its co-polymers are used as flocculants or coagulants in industrial wastewater treatment .Homo-polymer is used in this application and can be either nonionic, cationic or anionic depending on the types of wastewater needs to be treated. Also polyacrylamide can be prepared either as linear or as cross-linked. In this study both types have been prepared and characterized using FTIR, NMR and viscosity measurement for the molecular weight determination. Turbidity measurement and the Jar test were used to determine the efficiency of the coagulant. The results showed that cross-linked polyacrylamide worked better than a linear one in coagulating solids particles present in wastewater with improved slurry solids separation efficiency. The sedimentation of the sludge by gravity with a settling time of less than one minute was achieved based on settling characteristics of the wastewater and 90% or more water recovery was observed.
